I have been applying for jobs for months and haven’t gotten any interviews. I have been truthfully answering that I have a disability when they ask. Do you think that is affecting my ability to get an interview? How do you answer that question? Do you answer during the application/interview process, or do you wait until after you are hired?

I don’t know how the law works in the US. But here in The Netherlands, a company can’t ask you about if you have a disability. So i would not mention it during a job interview. There is a lot of ignorance around this subject. So there is a big change they will choose someone else for the job if they have multiple options.

I too have been applying for jobs for months. My uncle is a retired judge, and I asked him about the EEO questions. I told him that I struggle with marking it honestly because I feel like they do not select me for interviews when I am honest. I started selecting -I do not choose to answer- or whatever they give us. This has improved my number of interviews. I did make the mistake of mentioning my ASD to an interviewer. She ghosted me. Masking is extremely difficult for me at this stage. I am very black and white. I have created checklists with the potential employer’s stated job duties to check it off against my resume. I once handed it to my interviewer during my interview. He hired me. 🙂

EmbracingASD, I’m so sorry that happened to you! It’s sad to know that discrimination is still happening.

In my case, with this site being such a big part of my life, as well as being a great display of what I can do, I kind of have to disclose that I have ADHD. I really hope it’s not preventing me from getting interviews, but there isn’t any way to be sure.
